Abstract (Croatian)

Područje biomaterijala je izrazito interdisciplinarno područje unutar znanosti o materijalima. U ovom radu je pozornost posvećena samo jednom segmentu biomaterijala, ponajprije onome koji se bavi inženjerstvom materijala za izradu humanih medicinskih implantata. Trenutno postoji veliki broj dostupnih materijala za izradu medicinskih implantata ali zbog ograničene opsežnosti ovog završnog rada spomenuti su samo oni materijali koji su najčešće obrađivani u navedenoj dostupnoj literaturi i znanstvenim radovima. Obzirom na mnogobrojne primjene i vrste medicinskih implantata, vrlo bi opsežan bio opis njihove svake pojedinačne primjene pa su stoga u središtu pozornosti materijali za izradu ortopedskih implantata jer tamo veliki doprinos može dati inženjerstvo materijala opisujući različite tribološke mehanizme trošenja implantata, utjecaj mehaničkih svojstava materijala na ponašanje u eksploataciji, utjecaj površine na specifične primjene itd. U radu su navedeni najzastupljeniji materijali za izradu medicinskih implantata podijeljeni po svojoj pripadnosti tehničkim skupinama materijala te su ukratko opisana njihova mehanička i kemijska svojstva kao i važno svojstvo biokompatibilnosti u različitim medicinskim primjenama. \Na kraju su spomenute i neke od najčešćih metoda modificiranja i prevlačenja površina medicinskih implantata koje se primjenjuju kako bi im se osigurala specifična uporabna svojstva ovisno o primjeni.

Abstract

Biomaterials science is a highly interdisciplinary field within a much larger field of materials science. This bachelor thesis is focused on observing only a part of biomaterials science, mainly the part that involves engineering of materials for medical implants. There is a large number of readily available materials for medical implants today, so due to the limited complexity of this thesis only the most frequently mentioned and discussed materials within the available literature and scientific journals are observed. Considering many types of medical implants and their applications, describing each and every one of them would require a much more complex approach to this subject, hence the main focus group in this thesis are orthopedic medical implants. Materials engineering can provide its largest contribution here by analyzing different tribological processes contributing to the wear of orthopedic medical implants, mechanical and chemical properties of materials and their influence on the durability of implants, surface properties in respect to the required characteristics for each type of implant application etc. The predominant materials for medical implants are classified here according to the general categories of materials and their mechanical and chemical properties are briefly covered as well as the important issue of biocompatibility in various types of medical implants. Finally, some of the most frequently used methods of surface modification are mentioned as the primary means of enhancing the desired properties of bulk materials for medical implants depending on the type of their medical application.
