Abstract (Croatian)
Abstract
This paper studies the process of welding aluminum castings, also deals with the quality of welds which have been tested trough different examinations. The introductory chapter represents a brief overview of the basic aluminum alloys used in casting, and gives a brief historical overview of the development of foundry industry. Literature review describes the problems in welding aluminum castings and procedures for welding of castings; MIG ( " Metal Inert Gas " ) and TIG ( " Tungsten Inert Gas " ) procedure. In the following literature review, MIG process that was used in welding is explained in detail, ie., it describes the preparation of the joints, shielding gases used in welding, selection of filler material, etc. All procedures about testing of welded aluminum castings are listed and described according to EN ISO 15614-2: 2005. In the described experiment, aluminium alloy (AlSI12 i AlSi4Cu3Mg2Zn2(Fe)) plates were casted in the sand mold. The parameters of welding were determined and the preparation of joints which are most suitable for welding aluminum alloys is described. Welds were then tested with non-destructive and destructive methods according to EN ISO 15614 – 2: 2005. Among the non-destructive methods, there have been performed a visual inspection, penetrant testing and radiographic testing. Among the destructive testing methods there have been conducted static tensile test, fracture test, macro and micro structure analysis. Results of experimental work indicate that the castings of aluminum alloys can be welded with optimal parameters, and that strength and toughness of the weld is much greater than the basic materials
