Abstract

The motivation for this work was found in repeated interests in building specialized seagoing ships in shipyards which are not necessarily placed on the sea cost. The reasons of these interests are probably in availability and in cost-benefit considerations of shipping companies. Therefore this paper presents a conceptual design of a shipyard on river Danube in Croatia which could answer to requirements by using the industrial potentials of the surrounding land-locked continental region. The introductory notes considered the inland navigation routes in Europe and in Croatia in order to assess the deliverability of ships built on rivers. Subsequently, the characteristic types of ships that could be included in the production plan of the shipyard are considered. The industrial capacities of regional companies of potential for cooperation in shipbuilding are analyzed in order to define the basic concept of a prevailingly assembly yard. The location of the shipyard has been investigated with respect to social an industrial characteristics in the region. The conceptual design proposal in the paper brings forward product analysis in order to define the shipyard layout, arrangement of working areas, material flows and launching procedures. © 2014 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
