Abstract

During the service torsional vibration resonance occurred in the propulsion system of a catamaran vessel. After series of measurements and testing some shortcomings of the ship and propulsion system, which could influence vibration response, have been detected. The ship-owner decided to improve the propulsion system and to eliminate detected imperfections step by step. The paper deals with measurements of shaft line torsional vibrations of a catamaran vessel in service. Some typical inducements of shafting torsional vibrations are indicated, providing full detail description of considered problem. Along with a description of the problem, measurement aim, plan, methodology and used instrumentation are described in details. Special attention is paid to measurement conduction and three measurement programs have been established. The results of the measurement are listed and properly commented, and circumstances which lead to torsional vibration resonance have been detected. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
