Abstract

In the present paper a thermo-mechanical finite element analysis of residual stresses due to welding is performed by using the shell/ three-dimensional (3D) modelling technique to improve both the computational efficiency and accuracy. In order to validate the shell/3D modelling technique in the temperature and residual stress calculations, two numerical examples are analysed. The first one is a butt welding of two plates and the other one is a butt welding of two pipes. It is concluded that the shell/3D modelling technique, based on the transition from the global shell model to the 3D local model discretized with a finer mesh of elements, is very efficient for this purpose.
