This paper analyses the application of the empirical rule used in estimations of overhead transmission line Aeolian vibrations using the Energy Balance Method, as recommended by CIGRE (International Council on Large Electric Systems), for determining the power dissipated in the cable. Based on empirical data obtained from the referenced papers, the influence of different values of frequency exponent, amplitude exponent and tension exponent on the factor of proportionality is considered. It is shown that the proportionality factor value, although it is expected to have more or less a constant value, can vary significantly with a change in frequency and cable tension. It is shown that a much better response can be obtained if a frequency function (or a function of both frequency and cable tension) is used for the proportionality factor instead of a constant in the expression for the power dissipated in the cable.
