Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the allowable and failure pressures of the valve housing. The housing without significant flaws subjected to hydrostatic pressure was analyzed, while the finite element (FE) analysis was conducted along with the experimental research. The strain gauges were pasted to the housing at four different locations with each strain gauge having two perpendicular measuring grids which were oriented in the longitudinal and the circumferential direction according to the local geometry of the housing area. The valve housing was pressurized by a pump and the pressurizing medium was water with the temperature of about 15 °C. A pressure transducer with the measuring range of 10 to 100 MPa was used for pressure measurement. An incremental load-displacement analysis was also performed by using the modified arc-length Riks method available in the ABAQUS program. It was also shown that the plastic collapse pressure results obtained by a real strain hardening material model agreed with the experimental results.
