Fizikalna i mehanička svojstva koja se mogu ostvariti kompozitima s metalnom matricom, čine ih izrazito zanimljivim materijalima za primjenu u zrakoplovnoj industriji, automobilskoj industriji i raznim drugim primjenama. U zadnje vrijeme, kompoziti s metalnom matricom ojačani s česticama su privukli veliku pažnju zbog svoje relativno niske cijene i karakterističnih izotropnih svojstava. Materijali za ojačanje kompozita s metalnom matricom uključuju čestice poput karbida, nitrida i oksida. U zadnjih 20 godina u nastojanju da se optimizira struktura i svojstva kompozita s metalnom matricom, razvili su se različiti postupci obrade. U primjeni ovi materijali stoga pokazuju vrlo zanimljiva svojstva koja se mogu iskoristiti u razne svrhe, a u ovom radu je istražena uporaba kompozita od aluminijske legure, ojačane s 20 % SiC čestica za izradu jarbola sportske jedrilice. Izvedena su ispitivanja mehaničkih svojstava i tvrdoće, te metalografske i kvantitativne analize. Uporabom programskog paketa koji je omogućio analizu metodom konačnih elemenata uočen je veliki potencijal koji ima ispitani kompozit s metalnom matricom.

Abstract

The physical and mechanical properties that can be obtained with metal matrix composites (MMCs) have made them attractive candidate materials for aerospace, automotive and numerous other applications. More recently, particulate reinforced MMCs have attracted considerable attention as a result of their relatively low costs and characteristic isotropic properties. Reinforcement materials include carbides, nitrides and oxides. In an effort to optimize the structure and properties of particulate reinforced MMCs various processing techniques have evolved over the last 20 years. In application these materials therefore show very interesting properties that can be utilized for various purposes. This thesis shows an investigation of an idea for using an aluminum alloy, strengthened with 20 % SiC particles, as a mast for sailboats in Laser class. Various testings were conducted that include mechanical properties testings, hardness testing, and analysis like metallographic, and quantitative spectrometric analysis with glow discharge. Also by using software a finite element method analysis (FEM) is used and it showed possible potential that lays within the metal matrix composites reinforced with particles, in general.
