Abstract

The cooling of the vertical plate immersed in initially quiescent fluid occurs in many engineering problems. The two approaches for prediction of time variation of the plate temperature and heat transfer rate between the plate and the fluid are compared. The first approach is based on solving of the full mathematical model by means of AVL FIRE software. The second approach is based on lumped capacitance method and known correlation function for the heat transfer coefficient. The model includes a temperature dependence of physical properties and time dependence of the heat transfer coefficient. The discrepancy between results obtained by the lumped capacitance method and by AVL- FIRE is small and could be explained by neglecting the transition of natural convection in lumped capacitance method.
