Method for design support problem (DeSP) formulation and solution in structural synthesis of 'open' ships (one long undivided cargo hold) is presented for the concept design phase (CDP). Open ships require special consid-erations of the structural model, due to its flexibility, particularly related to primary strength (bending, tor-sion), unsymmetrical load cases (racking) and required deflection tolerances for hatch covers. Presented deci-sion making procedure includes NAPASteel fast CAD to FEM modeling for the MAESTRO based response and adequacy analysis, and OCTOPUS Designer multi-criteria synthesis.
