Abstract

Today is the concept of materials coming from nature and apparent environmental advantages of biodegradable and/or biobased plastics, often referred to as bioplastics, very attractive to the official authorities and to the public. But the term bioplastics is used to describe two different concepts at the same time, functionality of the material at the end of its useful life (biodegradable/compostable plastics) and source of material (renewable resource-based or biomass-based plastics). It is important to realise that biobased plastics are not always biodegradable and biodegradable plastics are not always biobased, so this differentiation has to be recognized. The paper presents an overview of the most important biodegradable and biobased plastics, their applications and problems that will have to be overcome in the future.
