Application of deep-cryogenic treatment (DCT) in heat treatment of high speed steels are well documented in an number of references. But using DCT is not universal solution for all requirements in high speed steel tools usage. This paper compares the improvements of mechanical and tribological properties achieved by heat treatment with or without application of DCT on test samples made of the HS10-2-5-8 high speed steel. The deep-cryogenic process or three high temperature tempering process has been applied after gas quenching from an austenization temperature selected between 1130 °C, 1180 °C or 1230 °C. The influence of these heat treat parameters to the improvement of the following properties has been compared: dimensional stability, secondary hardening and fracture toughness and erosive wear resistance.
