Abstract

A report on the welding of heat-treatable steel 25 CrMo 4 and 42 CrMo 4, 2 mm thick sheet, with high power Nd:YAG laser is presented. Laser and process parameters were explored, applying model of central composite plan. Argon and helium were used as shielding gases. The testing was performed on the geometry of the welded joint. Results have been processed applying statistical methods and mathematical modeling using method of responding surfaces was done. Effects of focus position relative to the workpiece surface and gas flow rate upon the geometrical characteristics have been registered, while the effect of heat input is most significant. Linear and quadratic models of geometrical characteristics of the welded joint were obtained.
