In this paper the influence of hydrogenation on mechanical properties and microstructure of MIG double-side welded EN AW-5083 aluminium alloy was investigated. According to the results obtained from tensile tests, there was no significant difference in yield and tensile strength between uncharged and H-charged weld, but elongation and contraction were decreased in the hydrogenated specimen. Such tensile behaviour suggests that hydrogen was absorbed in amount high enough to cause the embrittlement of welded joints, which is confirmed by embrittlement index IHE = 20.9%. Detachment between base metal and weld started at the weld-root and afterwards the main crack continues spreading along the fusion line characterized by as-cast microstructure with fine equiaxed columnar grains. A great number of grain boundaries could be considered as H-traps and the sites from where initial microcracks start.
