Abstract

Foundries striving to accomplish defect free castings and to optimize their production regularly use numerical simulation software as a key part of technological casting preparations. In this way great reduction in excessive material, energy and time consumption is achieved. As a result of collaboration between Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (UNIZAG FSB) and RS Metali d.o.o. we were able to make a casting and solidification simulation for a flange that was made of EN-GJS-400-15 ductile iron. In addition to currently used designs two more gating and risering systems were created for the same flange at UNIZAG FSB. Additional simulations in software ESI QuikCAST® were executed which showed improvement of cast quality and efficiency of production.
