Abstract

A comparison of joint strength of friction stir welded (FSW), friction stir spot welded (FSSW) and friction stir linear spot welded (FSLSW) 2 mm sheets of EN AW 5754 in a lap joint is presented. The optimal welding parameters were obtained based on maximal joint strengths at FSW. From the welds made using all three welding methods the tensile test specimens were prepared and the weld microstructure was analysed. The results show significant joint strength improvement when using FSLSW compared to FSSW. A FSLSW joint strength exceeded the strength of the base material at only small increase of welding time.
