Abstract

Intuitive methods for the determination of the ship added resistance in waves date from the very beginning of the study of this complex physical problem. They were created in the absence of accurate analytical and numerical tools for the ship motion and present phenomenon analysis, particularly wave diffraction and radiation. Physical idealization of this hydrodynamic problem remained the same even after the development of modern numerical methods. This paper contains a theoretical basis of the ship added resistance in waves along with the intuitive methods explained by using the numerical results obtained on the basis of the extended potential flow theory. Increasing of the ship resistance due to head harmonic wave is described by quadratic transfer function QTF. Influence of the ship motions and response phase shifts on the ship added resistance in waves is also presented. Numerically obtained data of the ship added resistance in waves are validated by comparing the results of intuitive and rational models with the available experimental results.
