Abstract

Coated cemented carbides currently represent 80-90% of the cutting inserts manufacturing due to the unique combination of wear resistance and toughness as well as the possibility of forming complex shapes. One of the most modern technologies of surface engineering is Plasma Assisted Chemical Vapour Deposition, PACVD which allows low temperature application of hard surface layers on the surface of various materials. In this paper deposition of multilayer gradient PACVD coating on the surface of ultrafine and coarse WC-Co cemented carbides was described. Multilayer gradient coating system consists of TiN layer, gradient layer of TiN + TiCN and layer of TiCN. Characterisation of the consolidated samples prior to the coating deposition as well as preliminary evaluation of coated samples has been carried out. On the basis of conducted research the conclusions on the compatibility of the applied coating and cemented carbide grades used as a substrate are brought.
